Sore throat is most often the result of the inflammatory disease called pharyngitis that affects almost everybody at least once a year.
There are three principal causes of throat inflammation: viruses, bacteria and non-infectious factors: mechanical, chemical, thermal irritants, gastro-oesophageal reflux and allergies. However, viruses are the most frequent cause, hence the unjustified use of antibiotics is wrong and detrimental to the organism.
If there is inflammation of the vocal cords, the diagnosis is laryngitis. The causative agents are usually the same as for pharyngitis, but it may also result from excessive straining of the voice. Laryngitis is most frequently accompanied by loss of voice, hoarse voice, dry painful cough and dry throat. Very often the inflammatory process can affect the larynx and the pharynx simultaneously.
Pastilles are among the most frequently used remedies for sore throat.
Many products are currently developed, with different mechanisms of action, composition and dose of the active substance.
Some of them are with marked antiviral effect and contain different antiviral agents, notably ionised zinc, natural and synthetic molecules. Others contain antibacterial agents, both of natural origin, e.g. propolis, and artificially synthesised active substances. Their local effect on the causes of the inflammation contributes to faster relief of the symptoms (sore throat, swelling, irritation, etc.) and assist in the faster coping with the infection causing them.
The pastilles are intended to ease one of the most irritating symptoms as well: the dryness in the throat. This problem is resolved most frequently with classical sweeteners, e.g. sugar, or with more modern means, e.g. hyaluronic acid.
The medication with ingredients having a synergic effect guarantee high effectiveness in the symptomatic treatment of throat infections, resulting in faster alleviation of the symptoms, shorter duration and faster healing.
